Airport Zurich, Switzerland

The first flight to leave Swiss airspace took place as early as 21 July 1921, but the search for a site for a major airport first began in 1943. A suitable site was found in Kloten, near Zurich in 1945, on land sold for that purpose by the federal government. Construction began in 1946 and the first flights took off in 1948. A 3-day official opening ceremony with a large air show was held in 1953. The first airport extension was completed in 1961 and a Terminal B renovation completed in 1971. Noise became a major issue in 1972, when a night-time curfew was approved. This was followed in 1974 by the introduction of a new approach route and a new runway in 1976. The noise issue escalated and a noise charge was introduced in 1980. In 1984, an agreement was reached allowing arrivals and departures to be made over German airspace.

Zurich Airport was privatised in 1999 and the company “Unique” appointed as operator in 2000. Negotiations on procedures and noise pollution over Germany and Switzerland began back in 2003. A major extension to the airport was completed in 2003, including a multi-storey car park, a new midfield terminal and the Skymetro, an underground shuttle railway between terminals. During the short ride you are treated to sounds of Switzerland, including alphorns, cowbells and the lowing of cows. Further renovations continued with the rebuilding of the old 'B' fingerdock, including a spacious viewing terrace.

In 2008, after years of dispute over noise, a German-Swiss working group was finally set up to find a solution to the problem that would be fair for both countries. Approximately 25 million passengers are “processed” at Zurich Airport, arriving from or departing to around 175 destinations in some 70 countries. It is little wonder that the airport is of considerable economic importance to the region. It employs over 20,000 people full time, with 70% of jobs airline related and 30% airport related.
