Free Desktop Wallpaper

Desktop wallpapers, or backgrounds – the screen that you see when all programmes on your computer are closed – are extremely popular and come in all sorts of variations from straightforward still pictures to moving images, such as fish swimming around the screen as if it were an aquarium. Countless wallpapers are found on Internet and many people frequently swap them, simply for the sake of a change. But problems can occur if a virus or malware is introduced when downloading wallpaper. If you experience problems with your desktop wallpaper, such as an abnormal change in its appearance, changes in size or colour, or icons disappearing, it could indicate that you have advanced problems with your computer. Certain types of viruses and malware can be reflected in desktop wallpaper problems, either as a direct result of a problem with the wallpaper itself or through the effect of a virus or malware on the computer’s operation. This can be guarded against by ensuring that your firewall, anti-virus/anti-malware programmes are always updated and scans are programmed at frequent intervals.

Desktop wallpaper also needs to suite the size of your monitor. The size of a monitor is the diagonal screen measurement in inches, the same as the measurement for a television set. The image shown on a computer monitor is measured in pixels. Pixel is the acronym for “picture element” and pixels are the tiny squares that make up the entire image shown on a screen. Monitor resolution is given in pixel width x height; for example 640 pixels wide x 480 pixels high. This means that the image on the screen is made up of 307,200 pixels. But monitor sizes vary and one pixel size does not necessarily fit all. 640 x 480 is best for a 14” monitor but terrible for a 21” monitor, which would need a resolution size of 1600 x 1200 pixels. Conversely, a monitor resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels would look terrible on a 14” monitor. Most of the images shown on this website have a resolution of 1200 x 800 and are suitable as desktop wallpaper on most monitors between 15” and 21”.

The images here are 1920 x 1200 pixels in a higher Photoshop quality and thus suitable for larger monitors. Modern monitors can adjust the resolution to suit the downloaded wallpaper. Check with the manual for your monitor to find out the recommended settings. To use an image for your desktop, first left click on the mouse to enlarge the image and then with a right click open a context menu from which you can choose to install the image as desktop wallpaper.

Please note that although the term monitor resolution has been used here and is quite common, it is in fact incorrect and pixel dimension is the correct term. Resolution is in effect the pixel density per unit distance or area, e.g. pixels per inch (PPI) and not the total number of pixels. The more pixels per inch the higher the resolution. This however, is of far more significance for printing photographs than viewing them on a screen.
