| The world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is scheduled to retire in 2014. The vessel made her first visit to Split, Croatia on 17 May 2006, during a six-month
deployment. Following a two-week Atlantic crossing, about 5,000 sailors and marines had four days to spend relaxing in the
city. The Enterprise is the 8th U.S. Navy ship to bear the name and, like her World War II
predecessor, is known as’ Big E’, although some prefer to call her ‘Starship’ after the Star Trek TV
series. Enterprise departed her Norfolk, Virginia homeport on 2 May 2006 for exercises in the Mediterranean with the rest of Carrier Strike Group 12. |
