Set in the heart of South-East Asia, Malaysia is separated into two regions
by the South China Sea – East Malaysia (the northern part of Borneo) and
West Malaysia (the Malayan Peninsula south of Thailand). Kuala Lumpur is the
capital of Malaysia and also by far its largest city, with an area of about
250 km2 and a population of around 1.5 million. The city lies on the west
coast of the Malayan Peninsula. The urban agglomeration of Greater Kuala
Lumpur, better known as the Klang Valley after its principal river, is
estimated to have a population in the region of 7 million. Chinese and
Indians make up the main races in this city of multiculturalism, clearly
reflected in the diversity of cultural customs, languages, cuisine,
architecture and religions. Kuala Lumpur is a prime example of a city that
has managed to retain the best of its cultural heritage despite its size and
modern facilities. Malaysia is a veritable paradise and the friendliness of its people is legendary. Sun, sea and sandy beaches, beautiful islands, a vast variety of fauna and flora, rain forests and magnificent mountains – truly a country of contrasts. |
