Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them
all? Most people know that that line stems from the popular fairy tale,
“Sleeping Beauty”. But where did the saying “Breaking a mirror brings seven
years bad luck” come from? In ancient times, the reflection in water was
regarded as the person’s inner soul. Should anything disturb that image,
that person would be plagued by misfortune. This superstition continued
after mirrors were invented – breaking a mirror brings bad luck. And why
seven years? That stems from the Roman belief that health and fortune change
every seven years.
