Musical instruments come in all shapes and sizes and can be divided into the
following main categories: Bowed string: violins, violas, cellos and double bass etc. All with four strings and played with a bow. Woodwind: flute, oboe, clarinet bassoon and saxophone etc. Played by blowing into or across the mouthpiece and pressing keys to allow air to exit at various points on the instrument to provide the pitch of notes. Brass: trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba etc. Played by blowing into a cup-like mouthpiece and pressing valves or, with the trombone moving a slider, to lengthen the distance the air travels through the tubing, to provide the pitch of notes. Percussion: various drums, xylophone, glockenspiel, tubular bells, vibraphone, triangles, gongs, tambourine, cymbals etc. all of which are played by striking them in some way. Keyboards: basically any instrument such as a piano, which is played using a keyboard. Guitars: six-stringed classic guitar and for pop music, the six-stringed instrument and four-stringed bass guitar with amplifier. |
