Over a number of years, traffic lights in Switzerland have slowly and surely
been replaced by roundabouts to improve traffic flow. However, it is not
that simple to merely plant a roundabout in the middle of existing
crossroads. More often than not, the space provided allows only a limited
size of roundabout so that large vehicles such as buses and trucks can make
the turns. And so some roundabouts are rather small. But let’s forget
traffic technology. All these new roundabouts across the country have given
us a wealth of roundabout design culture, from raised slabs of concrete that
look something akin to a sunken UFO, to exotic sculptures which probably
only the artists understand and superb seasonal flower displays that bring
joy to the hearts of avid gardeners and all those who should have their eyes
on the road. |
