FIS Worldcup Ski Jumping, Engelberg

One round of the FIS World Cup in ski jumping was held in Engelberg, in the Swiss Alps, in 2016. These photographs were taken on 16th December, which was qualification day – a day on which spectators are admitted free. Because it is not a competition day the crowds are smaller and it is easier to take up good positions to get pictures.

Engelberg hosts Switzerland’s only ski jumping World Cup event. It has the world’s longest natural ski jump, and all the top competitors take part in this competition.

There are plenty of amazing alpine features in this ski area below Mount Titlis (elevation 3,238 metres): for a start there is the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first revolving gondola which turns through 360 degrees as it takes you to the summit, so that everyone has the complete view; at the top you will find the unique Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge, offering a challenge to the nerves; then there is the Glacial Park, where there is a lot to interest the visitor in summer and winter.

The FIS Ski Jumping World Cup is a peripatetic event held in a series of ski resorts in different European countries starting in Poland in November 2017. By the time the competition arrived in Engelberg in December 2017 it had been in Finland, Russia, and Germany. The World Cup season is not concluded until March 25th 2018, after no fewer than 23 meetings for the men, and 17 for the ladies.

At the time that the ski jumpers arrived in Engelberg, the leaders were: Mens, (yellow bib) Richard Freitag of Germany and Junshiro Kobayashi of Japan; and Ladies, (yellow bib) Maren Lundby of Norway and Katharina Althaus of Germany.

In the season 2016 -2017 the overall FIS Ski Jumping World Cup winners were:
Men: Stefan Kraft (Austria); Ladies: Sara Takanashi (Japan). The team event was won by Poland (Men) and Japan (Ladies).
