The game is also known as ball hockey, road hockey, deck hockey and ground
hockey and is played with or without skates, using either a roller hockey
puck or more often a ball. Street hockey is particularly popular in the USA
and Canada and rules tend to vary from one area to another. As body checking
is generally prohibited, heavy padding, as used in ice hockey, is not worn,
although goal keepers tend to use bulky but light gear so as to block more
of the goal area. Although street hockey at its highest level is played on
specially marked pitches with proper goal nets, the game, as its name
suggests, is often played on quiet streets using bottles, bins or anything
else at hand for goals. |
