After 35 years of planning and 8 years of construction the first part of the
Zurich-west bypass, in Switzerland, was finally opened on 3 July 2006. The
motorway is also a bypass for Birmensdorf where its inhabitants have long
been plagued by the around 25,000 vehicles passing through the town. To
celebrate, a grand three-day festival was held on the Reppischtal Bridge and
in the Eggrain Tunnel before the official opening. The radio traffic reports
of “jams between Urdorf South and Birmensdorf” will at last be a thing of
the past. |
